it was more scared of me than i was of it, poor thing. found it on the bookshelf, it was just over a metre long. their bite is deadly but they're back-fanged so they struggle to get their mouths open wide enough to bite something big
It helps to know that it can't bite you. It is beautiful. We had couleuvres near the house in France and they have backward fangs too, but my problem is I can not distinguish a couleuvre from an adder so I never got comfortable with them.
